How to Choose the Right Ankle Brace for Basketball: An Athletic Trainer’s Perspective

Choosing the Right Ankle Brace for Basketball

Basketball places significant demands on the ankles. Players repeatedly jump, land, cut, and change direction throughout practices and games. For athletes with a history of ankle sprains or instability, the right level of ankle support can be an important part of their routine.

Olivia Keefe, Athletic Trainer, UC Davis Men’s Basketball, shares her experience with three ZAMST ankle braces—the A1 Ankle Brace, A2-DX Ankle Brace, and Filmista Ankle—and how different levels of ankle support can fit the needs of basketball athletes.

A1 Ankle Brace: A Balance of Support and Mobility

The ZAMST A1 Ankle Brace is designed for athletes looking for ankle support while maintaining freedom of movement.

Olivia describes the A1 as an option for basketball players who have experienced a previous ankle sprain or who want additional day-to-day support.

“We have had a really good experience with the A1. For a player who has had a previous ankle sprain or just wants a little more support day to day, it gives us a nice middle ground - enough stability to feel secure, but not so much that the athlete feels restricted.

From an athletic training standpoint, I like that the fit is consistent and the player can put it on the same way every time, which is not always the case with tape over the course of a long season.

The feedback from our guys has been very positive, especially with cutting, landing, and changing direction. It is one of those braces that is easy to work into a player’s normal routine because they feel supported without feeling like they are wearing a big brace.”

A2-DX Ankle Brace: Higher-Level Ankle Support

For athletes who need a higher level of ankle support, the ZAMST A2-DX Ankle Brace provides a more substantial option.

Olivia describes the A2-DX as an option for basketball athletes with a history of ankle issues, recurring instability, or athletes returning to play who prefer additional support.

“For players who need a higher level of support, we have had a lot of success with the A2-DX. This is usually the option I look at for someone with more of an ankle history, recurring instability, or a player coming back who just feels better with something more substantial around the ankle.

It gives a very secure feel, and compared with taping, I like knowing the support is going to be consistent from practice to practice and game to game.

What I have noticed most is the confidence it gives the athlete - once they trust the brace, they stop thinking about the ankle and get back to playing normally. It is definitely more support than every player needs, so for the right athlete it has been a really valuable option for us.”

Filmista Ankle: Low-Profile Ankle Support for Basketball

Some basketball athletes prefer a lower-profile option that provides additional ankle support without significantly changing the feel of their basketball shoes.

The ZAMST Filmista Ankle is designed with a thin, low-profile construction, making it an option for athletes who prioritize mobility and comfort.

Olivia describes Filmista as an option for athletes who prefer this type of support:

“Filmista has been a great option for the guys who want some added ankle support but really do not like the feel of a traditional brace. It is thin, fits well inside a basketball shoe, and does not change the way the shoe feels nearly as much as some bulkier options.

From my perspective, it works really well for athletes who value mobility and comfort but still want something there for a little extra stability and confidence.

The biggest compliment is probably that players do not talk about it much once they are wearing it - they put it on, go practice, and it does not become a distraction. For certain players, especially ones who are very particular about their shoes and movement, that is a big deal.”

Different Ankle Support Options for Basketball

Olivia’s experience highlights that basketball athletes may have different needs when it comes to ankle support.

The A1 Ankle Brace can be considered when an athlete wants a balance of support and freedom of movement. The A2-DX Ankle Brace provides a higher level of support for athletes with a history of ankle issues or recurring instability. The Filmista Ankle offers a low-profile option for athletes who prioritize mobility, comfort, and the feel of their basketball shoes.

Ultimately, the right ankle brace depends on the individual athlete, their needs, and their preferences.
